The 2018 {Local} Father's Day Gift Guide

The warm weather is here to stay and it’s time to honor all of the special fathers in your life! You know what I love about Father’s Day? Besides having a nice little family day in June, both my dad and my husband never ask for anything, so whatever I give will be a surprise and something they’ll appreciate. A new grill brush? Fantastic! A greeting card with a package of new undershirts? You shouldn’t have! If you’re looking for more ideas though (especially in our neck of the woods), I hope this list inspires you to get out and shop local!

BROWER CLUB

Let's start with the store that has a little bit of everything. If you've ever walked into the Brower Club downtown, you know what I'm talking about. It's a hip, manly, lounge-y men's store that carries awesome gifts for men, skin and grooming products, really cool clothes, bags, and more - with a side of legit coffee too. Yes, the Brower Club is also home to The Roost Outpost coffee (which I love AND is on the LH Hook-Up Card). So stop in, get an iced chai latte and a fancy donut if you're really feeling crazy, and get to shopping. The first item shown is really 2 gifts in 1. It's a candle that once burns down, can be used as a glass tumbler. I love the Salt & Stone products for men (especially the sunscreen stick), and these "Blood Type Whiskey" shirts need no explanation. They also stock bathing suits, so if Dad has been rocking the same one since Bush was in office (or on the radio) check those out too.

THE GRAVITY VAULT

Looking for a bonding experience? Want to get your favorite dad out of his comfort zone? I love the idea of trying something new, and The Gravity Vault in Hoboken is the perfect new place to climb. At over 25,000 square feet of climbing, it is their largest facility to date. There are plenty of options to choose from and the staff is super helpful. Whether you would like a private 1-hour session, a group intro to rock climbing, or more experienced programs like a technique class, they have plenty to choose from. You can simply walk-in, purchase a day pass, or even go ahead and buy your spouse a membership. I like the idea of a membership because it’s a great alternative to the average gym and has additional benefits like yoga classes and member meetups. I also think this would make for a fun date night – nothing like some friendly competition before dinner! And, it’s a gift for them and for you too – my favorite.

THE HOBOKEN MAN

One of my favorite practical go-to gifts for Father’s Day has to be a visit to an upscale men’s barbershop like The Hoboken Man. This place is swanky, but still comfortable and conveniently located uptown in the Maxwell shops. None of the men in my family would ever treat themselves to a Hot Lather Shave and that’s why it’s such a good gift. Whether you buy a gift certificate or book a specific service, a few options that caught my eye were the The Express Package (a signature cut, precision shave, and the signature manicure & pedicure), the Bald Head Shave (because we don’t want to exclude anyone, people!), or the Father-Son Duo. The Father-Son Duo is perfect if you want to ship off a husband and a kid and enjoy some free time 😉 If you have more than one child, I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful. Visit their site or stop-in to purchase a gift certificate.

CORGI SPIRITS & DISTILLERY

In my mind, I feel like a nice haircut & shave go well together with handcrafted gin and that’s why these are next to each other! I have been waiting to plan a trip to Corgi Spirits in Jersey City for a while now, and once baby #2 arrives, I’m going and taking whoever wants to come with me. Again, I love gifts that are an experience and gifts that involve more than just the recipient! Take a tour of the distillery, do a tasting ($5 to sample 3 products, or free if you buy a bottle to take home), enjoy a unique specialty cocktail in the lounge, or hang outside in their outdoor space. Another bonus is that you can bring your dog if you’re staying outside! Food trucks are present during warmer months.

LOVEPRINT

Some of you may remember these beautiful cufflinks I posted last year. These were so popular, I wanted to mention them again for all new dads, or doggy dads. Yup, you did read that correctly! Loveprint also makes keychains or cuffs of your beloved pup’s pawprints. Loveprint by Camille Cesari is located right in Jersey City, but to get started, all you need is the to-go kit to get started. Instead of using ink, Camille uses soft wax to capture a fingerprint and then it is cast in a precious metal of your choice. Truly thoughtful and truly one of a kind. The cufflinks shown above can be made with or without gold bezel (14 or 18kt), come in small or medium size, and can even be monogrammed with your child’s initials. Personally, I love the necklaces so if any of you are still looking for a belated Mother’s Day gift, I would highly recommend a visit to their site or store.

VINTAGE ON FIRST

Sports fan on your hands? Looking for a cool throwback gift? I LOVE sifting through the vintage t-shirts at this relatively new spot downtown (on 1st St., hence the name). In the past I’ve found awesome 90’s grunge band t-shirts, plenty of Giants/Jets gear, and other team apparel like the ones pictured. One idea is to try to find a shirt from the year you were born and give it to your dad. For your spouse, maybe something from the year you met, or from the year your child was born (more likely to find if you have older children!). Whether you find a hat, t-shirt, jacket, or just something for yourself, it’s worth the trip!

BUCKET & BAY CRAFT GELATO

Does the dad in your life have a sweet tooth? Then this one’s for you! Really. It can be for you too – another gift I love 😉 Bucket and Bay has locations in both Hoboken and Jersey City but if you’re looking to stay in, they also deliver right to your door. This isn’t your typical gelato either – this is grass-fed, organic gelato made in small batches. Their bold flavors range from Black Label Vanilla to Pistachio Chip to alcohol-infused creations like the one pictured above. Yes, friends, that is actually Jameson coffee gelato topped with a whiskey caramel sauce & a sprinkle of espresso powder. Want to take the gift a step further? Sign dad up for a gelato making class. For class selections and more information, please see their website.

Bonus: Save 10% off cups and cones at the Hoboken location with your Hook-Up card!

TIE BRO

TieBro specializes in handmade, original bow ties that are perfect for father/son presents. You may have seen this local vendor at the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival or at other art and craft festivals in northern NJ. The owner and bow tie maker, Noel Gregory, sells a wide variety of his designs on his Etsy shop. Choose a favorite sports team, a favorite comic book superhero, simple stripes, or create your own custom bow tie for the gentleman in your life.

JACK RABBIT

For the dad who is an avid athlete, or just wants to get more active, Jackrabbit of Hoboken has some tech friendly gift ideas like the Vyper 2.0 vibrating foam roller, wireless ear buds, Garmin watches, and more. Certainly they have a fresh selection of shoes and apparel, but it's worth a trip in to score dad something new that maybe he didn't even know he needed ;)

ALEX MORALES ATELIER

Located on First Street in Hoboken, Alex Morales Atelier is definitely worth a visit. Not only is Alex friendly and welcoming, but his passion for creating art is so evident, it's contagious. You can commission any type of piece that interests you, or go with something familiar like a wedding photo or sketch of your kid(s). I also love his sculptures and these gorgeous wooden serving boards pictured above. These 'wood' make a great gift for any father figure in your life (dad joke... sorry).

Set Sail....

If you're staying local this year but still want to be on the water, check out a boat cruise (options include brunch, sunset, and more) or take advantage of kayak rides on the Hudson.
