The 2019 Mother's Day Gift Guide!

It's been quite a year! Since writing last year's Mother's Day guide, I've added another human being to my family. As a mom of two, I am exhausted, fulfilled, exhausted, thankful, in love with my girls, busier than ever, and sincerely cannot imagine how my mother did it with three. I don't like to play the comparison game, so whether you are a mom who works outside of the home, inside of the home (SAHM), a Pinterest mom, an Amazon Prime-kinda mom, ANY KIND OF MOM-- then I'm sure you are very deserving of a nap and a gift (or two) from this list. Whether you are looking for a unique gift for your mother, grandmother, aunt, or friend, this list has you covered! As usual, this guide contains amazing items from local businesses and were hand-picked by me.

FOR THE MAMA THAT WANTS TO REMEMBER THESE MOMENTS FOREVER

(and won't, because #mombrain)

NEWPORT BABIES PHOTOGRAPHY

For the expecting mama who wants to document this journey with some beautiful maternity photos, or the newly minted mommy who just delivered a teeny tiny miracle, consider Newport Babies Photography. Caroline Baptista is truly amazing at what she does - her gorgeous photos can be found all over town, as she is a local favorite and recommended time and time again on the mom boards. Gifting a newborn photo session is one of the most special things you can do for the new mommy in your life. This Mother's Day, Newport Babies Photography is offering sessions that include 20 edited digital images and three mini wallet sized albums for $400 (perfect for moms and moms-to-be!). Use the following link to book sessions and view availability. All month long, maternity and newborn shoots in their studio will be available with fresh flowers. Looking for natural light and some fresh air? Outdoor shoots in various flower fields as they bloom are an option as well! (And, they are a LH Hook-Up vendor, too!)

FOR THE MOM WHO APPRECIATES FASHION & FAIR TRADE...

MARGO MARKET

This uptown gem has so many gorgeous pieces that it's hard to pick a direction to go in. Their clothes? Dreamy. Versatile. Ethically sourced. The pieces are far from "fast fashion". If you want to buy something special for a woman in your life that will last, all while supporting independent & local artists and designers, then head to Margo Market. Like the bag pictured above? No one schleps like a mother schleps. As a mom, I can't have enough functional bags - or enough room in them. This stylish weekender by ABLE is made from 100% real leather that has been ethically sourced from Ethiopia. Be sure to catch their trunk show at the store on Saturday & Sunday of Mother's Day Weekend. ABLE, as well as other brands in the shop, work to provide economic opportunities for women. Supporting other moms while shopping? I'm in. And if you're looking for something smaller, I LOVE their soy wax candles, handmade serveware, and face+body mists. They have one for every stress inducing and caffeine seeking moment of your day. #kiddingbutnot

FOR THE MOM WHO'S TIRED OF COOKING

ABBEY BELL CATERING

Ladies, be sure to highlight this one and send directly to your partner. I don't want to generalize, as I know moms cook, dads cook, caregivers cook -- this one is for whoever does the dirty work in the kitchen and needs. a. break. Abbey Bell Catering, or ABC for short, can whisk you away from the kitchen with her amazing meals delivered directly to your door. No, you don't have to prep it, cook it, thaw it, follow 14 steps of directions- no, none of that. Fueled by her passion for health and cuisine, Chef Abbey Bell offers meals delivered to your door that are designed to lighten your load and alleviate the hassle of making dinner. Abbey works with metro area farms to bring you seasonally driven menus that will save you time and nourish you and your family. A gift certificate for ABC would make a wonderful Mother's Day present for any mom who's short on time and still wants a delicious meal. And come on, isn't that all of us? Visit here to learn more.

FOR THE MOMMY WHO NEEDS A TIME OUT...

HOBOKEN WOMEN'S WELLNESS

Why do your kids get all the peace and quiet? Kidding, kidding. But in all seriousness, moms need time-outs too, and Hoboken Women's Wellness is the perfect hideaway. This cozy downtown spot is home to amazing, peaceful massages. Trust me, I know. I have been for prenatal massages, postnatal, and their regular Signature massages. This month they have a 'Deep Calm with CBD' massage that I am dying to try! All of the massage therapists at Hoboken Women's Wellness truly take the time to get to know your needs and preferences. They are recommended my local moms over and over again. If you haven't been, you're missing out! And if you're looking for another unique gift for a new or expecting mama, they offer services like Infant Massage Instruction and Belly Casting. Lucky for us, they're on the Hook-Up Card too!

FOR THE CHILL MOMS...OR THE ONES TRYING TO GET THERE...

ROSEBUD CBD

Ok, so if you haven't heard of CBD oil yet, it's safe to say you've been living under a rock. And if so, that's ok! Not here to judge. I stumbled across CBD oil over a year ago and quickly found Rosebud. After doing a little research on the company, I learned that their CBD-rich hemp flower comes from an organic-certified farm in Oregon, yet they are based right here in Weehawken, NJ. Oh, and my favorite part? It's headed by one badass female entrepreneur. Yup, the founder, Alexis Rosenbaum, is a super passionate and driven CEO - and still a one-woman-show. I started buying Rosebud CBD oil over six months ago and can attest to the superior quality. Each batch is lab tested to ensure potency, quality, and accuracy in dosing. There are no pesticides, herbicides, solvents, additives, flavorings, sweeteners, or preservatives! Aside from their CBD oils, they offer a CBD salve which makes the perfect gift for someone looking to reduce inflammation (also great for eczema, psoriasis, sore muscles and pain, etc.) My friend's grandmother LOVES this stuff. Rosebud is already stocked on the shelves of some of your favorite local shops and yoga studios. Go to their site to find a retailer or buy directly online.

FOR THE MOMMY- T0- BE...

HAZEL BABY

When you're looking for a present for a baby, toddler, or younger child, Hazel Baby is a must. This adorable shop has locations in Hamilton Park (right on the park!) and in downtown Jersey City (right next to City Hall) has everything you never even knew you wanted. If you need a thoughtful, unique gift for a new or expecting mama, Hazel Baby has you covered! I'm asked a lot about what to get for a mother-to-be. Speaking from experience, they probably don't need another muslin blanket or white onesie. I love giving local, meaningful, different items - like this awesome Jersey City print to hang in a nursery or playroom. "The Little Years" book is also such a cute gift, in addition to "My Mom -In Her Own Words". You also can't go wrong with a book like "Goodnight Statue of Liberty" and combine it with an adorable outfit from L'ovedbaby. Looking for something to add to a friend's hospital bag? They have travel sets from Earth Mama already stocked with essentials she'll be happy to have. The staff is so incredibly helpful and will go out of their way to help you find what you need (or don't know you need!). I'm so happy that they recently launched a baby registry. If you're an expecting mommy or know of one, I highly recommend you register at Hazel Baby.

WHEN THAT '10 YEAR CHALLENGE' ON FACEBOOK MAKES YOU CRINGE...

DOWNTOWN MED SPA

Cringe. Cry. Or shake your head wondering when all of those lines appeared around your eyes. It's like looking at those photos of President Obama before and after taking office. Before and after having kids? I don't know about you, but I have aged about 10 years in the last 4. So ladies, this is one to buy for yourself! Unless you KNOW mom is looking for botox or fillers, I wouldn't recommend surprising her! Husbands, are you listening? Then tell your wife/mother/sister/grandma that she is beautiful and doesn't need any enhancements. But let's be real, so many of us want Botox, or fillers, or eyelash extensions -- anything that makes us look more youthful and AWAKE. Downtown Med Spa is offering an amazing package for Mother's Day. The package includes a Hydrafacial, Eyelash Extensions, AND Botox - all at this family-owned aesthetic and anti-aging center right in downtown Jersey City. If injectables aren't your thing, they have tons of other services like Facials, Microblading, Laser Hair Removal, and more. Check out their deal for Hook-Up Card members too!

SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO SMELL LIKE SPIT-UP...

WILLOW ROSE SHOP

I used to wear perfume every day, but after having kids, it's not part of my daily routine. It's too strong for my toddler (in simpler terms, she hates it) and I also don't want a ton of chemicals on my skin. When I came across the natural roll-on oils at Willow Rose, I was intrigued. The scents are lovely and easily buildable. Instead of wasting a few big sprays of an expensive perfume, roll on a little (or a lot) of these non-toxic beauties. Willow Rose Shop is new to 1st Street (right next to their sister store, Mint Market) and stocks athleisure {aka mom's best friend}, swimwear, accessories, and more. This yoga bag would also make the perfect gift for the yogi in your life. Mam-aste. Sorry, mom joke.

WHEN YOU NEED A GOOD GIFT, AND RIGHT THIS MINUTE...

LOVE LOCKED

I am officially obsessed with Love Locked, as it has become my new favorite store. Located in downtown Jersey City, it's easy to get to and FULL of gems (literally and figuratively). This cozy and magical little shop has crystals, gemstones, sage bundles, and so much more. The jewelry is what reeled me in. Their Instagram account has me dreaming of designing an engagement ring (for someone else I suppose, since I'm already married). Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" anyone? Pictured above is an adorable little ring inscribed with "mama". Love Locked has gorgeous necklaces and earrings too. The delicate necklace pictured on the cover photo can be custom made with your or your child's birthstones. They also sell jade rollers, tonics, and DollyMoo products (another local favorite of mine). And this cute mirrored compact? It's actually a phone charger as well! Designed by a local makeup artist, this compact does 2 jobs in one. Sold. If I could actually LOOK recharged, I'd pay a whole lot more.

WHEN MAMA WANTS A MALBEC

PAIR WINE TOURS

Food tours, house tours, wine tours - I love them all! If you feel like getting out and exploring Hoboken/Jersey City this year, consider taking mom on a Pair Wine Tour. Their slogan is "Wine school for people who prefer class trips!" and that sounds darn good to me! Choose from tours in Hell's Kitchen, The Lower East Side, and, of course - right here in Hoboken. All wines served come from one of our favorite local wine shops - Cork, which is located uptown and part of the Hook-Up program! For more information on tours, visit their site.

FOR THE FEMINIST IN ALL OF US...

DAISY'S WEARABLE ART

How many of you have passed by Daisy's adorable shop on 1st street? This local artist and mother designs beautiful jewelry available in-store, and carries a nice selection of airy, whimsical apparel. Some pieces, like their linens and silks are imported from Italy, while other designs are sourced from local designers. I love this 'Feminist' bag as a gift, along with one of Daisy's unique necklaces or pair of earrings. Stop in the next time you're strolling downtown!

FOR THE MAMA WHO ENJOYS BATH TIME MORE THAN HER KIDS DO...

ALCHEMY BODY SHOP

This online shop of divine bath + body products is based out of Jersey City and is female-owned and operated. Sense a theme here? Who run the world?! GIRLS. When I was younger, I would go to the mall and buy my mom lotions and candles from a popular big-box store full of bath & body products. I love Alchemy Body Shop as a grown-up alternative. Their products are handmade, non-toxic, and when you purchase them, your money goes right to a local business owner. For thoughtful gifts, I like the idea of pairing the Calming Cosmic Dust with a beautiful soy-wax candle or a nice bouquet of flowers. I'm also intrigued by "the balm", which is an all-purpose concoction to treat dry skin, cuts, burns, and can even be used as a makeup remover or hair treatment. We all know moms love a good multi-tasker!

FOR THE MOM WHO'S A SUCKER FOR THE SENTIMENTAL,

BUT SHORT ON SPACE

ARTKIVE

Whelp, this describes me to a "T". I admit that I am a "pack-rat" and want to save every little painting and card that my daughter makes. Like most of you reading this, we're short on space and simply can't keep saving everything. Our drawers and cabinets are stuffed with art supplies, old photographs, and crumpled artwork. I LOVE the idea of turning your child's artwork into a book that you can actually leave out on the table and look through, or send to a grandparent who lives far away. Sites like Artkive and Plum Print, take your child(s) artwork and digitize them, turning them into a beautiful keepsake. While I couldn't find a local option to do this, Mimosa Digital in downtown Hoboken, does offer other services like turning VCR tapes into DVD's. We did this for my parents a few years ago and it's such a special gift!

"IF FOUND, PLEASE MICROWAVE"

THE EMBER MUG

How many of you have seen our Little Hoboken mugs with this phrase? It's so freaking appropriate! Why is this a good gift for moms? Well, technically it's a good gift for anyone, but I think moms are the most deserving of it! Who else microwaves their cold coffee four times before 10am only to forget that you put it there? You end up finding it hours later, after you've already bought another coffee, while out picking up more diapers. This Ember ceramic temperature control mug is designed to be used in your home or at your desk, and allows you to set your precise drinking temperature. It actually maintains that temperature for approximately one hour, so you can enjoy your very necessary beverage without the microwave. It also 'wakes up' automatically when your hot beverage is poured in, much like you do when coffee is poured into your mouth, right?? ;) You can buy an Ember mug at the local Starbucks, and be sure to visit a local coffee shop for beans or ground coffee. Two of my favorites are Empire Coffee & Tea and City of Saints!

BECAUSE, #PLASTICBAGBAN

TIA'S PLACE

These bags need no explanation. Find these two hilarious bags (and more) at Tia's Place in Jersey City. This stylish little shop is located downtown near City Hall and carries clothing, bags, jewelry, and other accessories. Stop in or order online. Or, check out ours here.

Still stuck? When the woman in your life already has everything she needs, prefers to 'pay it forward', or you are simply out of ideas, please consider donating to one of these reputable charities. While there are many more to explore, these are just a few who support women in need.
