Teal Pumpkin Project

Halloween is such a fun time full of costumes and parties and LOTS and LOTS of candy. But for those with allergies, or parents of kids with allergies, Halloween can be a difficult and anxiety-ridden time.

Can you imagine being the child who doesn't get to go trick-or-treating? Or having to give all of your candy back because it wasn't safe to eat?

We had heard about people putting out teal pumpkins, but weren't quite sure what it all meant. So we reached out to the The Teal Pumpkin Project® to find out all about the movement and how we can help implement it in our own town.

Introduced in 2014, the Teal Pumpkin Project was launched to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals with food allergies. The color teal has long represented food allergy awareness and can now represent a fun and positive experience for all kids, especially those for whom candy is not an option. This nationwide movement offers an alternative for kids with food allergies, and helps our neighborhood to provide a safe place for all children to enjoy Halloween!

By displaying a teal pumpkin on your front porch or in your window, you are signaling that you have non-food treats to hand out. This doesn't mean you can't still hand out candy! Just keep them in a separate bowl to safeguard against cross-contact, and then you can be a safe spot for kids with and without allergies to get their goodies!

a safe place for all?
