Confessions of a Nanny: Saying Goodbye

When Mary Poppins raises her umbrella and heads for the clouds, she does it with a tear and a smile. The message, though, is a happy one - the children don't need her any more. As the perfect nanny, she loves them as her own...even though they are not hers to keep.

As most of you know, my full time job for the past 4 years has been a nanny to the three most amazing children. I started in London when I was 21, Dylan was 5, Logan was 1, and Chloe wasn’t even born! Now here we are, all grown up living in Hoboken / NYC.

What a crazy ride we’ve had! We’ve shared 15 birthdays together, we visited multiple countries together, we even moved to one! We made new friends, started new schools, joined new clubs, and threw ourselves into Hoboken life.

Sadly, our time together is coming to an end. My U.S. visa is due to expire and I am moving back to the UK this summer. It breaks my heart to think about leaving the children. I can’t imagine not seeing their smiley faces everyday, but I know we’ll stay in touch and their family will always be my family.

We do share an incredible bond and I do think it’s going to be quite a difficult separation on both sides. Over the next couple of months not only will I prepare them in advance for my departure and their new arrival, but also prepare myself, by talking openly with them and explaining when it will happen, where I am going and why things are happening the way they are.

The next few months are going to be a whirlwind--there is so much to do! Luckily, we found their new nanny pretty easily online and through the agency whom I obtained my visa through (Interexchange) -- and I really like her! I’ll feel at ease leaving knowing they’re confident, happy little humans who will bring a new light and meaning into their next nanny’s life.
