The Holistic Mom: Colds During Pregnancy: Safe Vs. Unsafe

9 months is a long time! At some point, especially during the winter months, you might find yourself battling a cough and cold. What can be extra frustrating is that many of your go to remedies may be off limits while pregnant. I’ve compiled some information here to best help you relieve these achy and uncomfortable symptoms. As always, I recommend you confer with your OB first.

I always like to point people to this great piece from the Times on cough medication in general. I also find this book to be a great resource when it comes to pregnancy safe medication.

Most doctors will advise avoiding medication in the first 12 weeks if you can. To that end, there are many non-medicinal, effective remedies you can try. These include steam showers, probiotics, garlic, apple cider vinegar, vitamin C in forms of fresh fruits and veggies, and honey for cough. Be sure to get lots of rest and hydration while you’re sick. Of course you can always order up chicken soup from local favorites like La Isla, Charritos, or Malibu Diner!

In terms of medication - Tylenol is safe and effective for treating a fever. It’s important to look for single ingredient medications instead of combination. For example, if you’re taking Tylenol for fever, you don’t want to take a cold medicine with additional Tylenol added. Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) by itself is generally considered safe for short term use.

The best, and most frustrating, answer is to let the cold run its course and treat the symptoms. Rest and hydration are really your best defense. And ask for help! You and your baby deserve it.
