I've joked many times about my special ability to pee my pants. You know, the "mommy sneeze" where you just can't control it. Well, I sneezed one too many times, and decided to get some info about what was happening to my body and what I could do to fix it.
I went to see Dr. Chitra Mittal of Liberty Physical Therapy, a physical therapy practice in Jersey City specializing in pelvic floor PT. After giving birth twice, one vaginal and one cesarean, I knew that I needed to see someone with an extensive background in this area. It turns out that I'm not alone. Did you know that 1 in 5 women experience pelvic floor issues after birth? That number increases for those of us with more one pregnancy, so basically there are a millions of us just peeing our pants all the damn time and not doing anything to fix it. It doesn't have to be this way, ladies!!
Liberty Physical Therapy is a state-of-the-art facility with eight private treatment rooms and a one thousand square foot gym. They, of course, treat all kinds of PT needs, but their work specifically with infants, children, expecting and new moms is where they caught my attention. Dr. Mittal really took her time with me explaining why I may have pelvic floor issues and all the of issues that may come along with it. We went through an extensive consultation followed by the evaluation.
There were a few surprises during the evaluation. I had no idea that so many things could be connected- like my hips were off, meaning that one of my legs were a little longer than the other. This was corrected right then and there with some stretches and massages from Dr. Mittal. She also addressed my C-section scar which was apparently very tight and likely full of scar tissue. She performed a "scar release" which was a little intense, but oddly relaxing at the same time. She assessed for Diastasis Recti, which certainly was a more thorough evaluation (and conclusive) than the "do - it - yourself" explanation I received from a trainer at the gym.
An internal assessment was also completed. I have to admit, I had NO IDEA that this was part of the process, but Dr. Mittal quickly put me at ease and walked me through every step of the assessment. Her confident and genuine demeanor made me feel so comfortable, and so I was able to relax and learn a lot about my own body. (I have since talked to a few people about this exam and they all looked at me like I had three heads when I said I didn't expect the internal exam. Apparently, I'm the only one who didn't know this was part of the process. But, I'm saying this anyway just in case you don't know either.)
Other issues that I don't experience, but that Liberty Physical Therapy also treats, include diastasis recti, bowel incontinence, clogged milk ducts (they have ultrasound treatment for the clogs), tailbone issues, pubic symphysis separation, pregnancy back pains, and more. Liberty PT even has a special table with the belly cut-out for pregnant moms!
Dr. Chitra Mittal and the staff at Liberty Physical Therapy are leading experts in the treatment of women, infants, and children. The team has treated hundreds of women over the last three years for prenatal and postpartum conditions, and is now one of the few practices that specializes in Pediatric Physical Therapy.
