These two sisters are changing Hoboken's
dance scene for kids.
meet Adela & Allyn of Studio AM
Founded by two sisters, Adela and Allyn, Studio AM is not just another dance class. These ladies are focusing on inclusion and education, bringing all the benefits of art and dance to the special needs population. Both sisters have degrees in dance, early childhood teaching experience, and over 20 years of dancing experience. With impressive dance backgrounds themselves (like a So You Think You Can Dance performance!!) and a deep passion for teaching, these girls are bringing a new style of dance class to the mile square.
Allyn is the studio's artistic director, while sister Adela is the studio's director and a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L). Adela's knowledge of OT and training as a therapist brings a multidisciplinary approach to their teachings and allows for inclusion of all students. This inclusion isn't just beneficial for those with special needs, but all students learn from each other and learn compassion, patience, and understanding. The inclusion sets a different tone in the class, and brings a level of mindfulness to all who dance together.
We checked with one mom of a special needs child who tried out the Creative Movement class, the Saturday class for students with special needs. Here are her thoughts:
"Studio AM’s creative movement class was great! The teachers were so sweet and attentive to my child while allowing her the opportunity to explore on her own. They adapted the class to keep the students engaged while creating a safe and fun environment for the children to enjoy. My daughter loved it! She looked forward to going to dance class and dancing with Ms.Adela and Ms. Allyn! They created such a fun atmosphere and are super patient and sweet. Definitely recommend this class!" -HM
