9/11: Hoboken's Victims Honored

September 11, 2001 was a day that changed our nation. Thousands of lives were lost that day, thousands more in combat, and thousands more from illness, injury, or by suicide from the effects of that day.

New Jersey lost over 674 lives that day, Hoboken alone lost 56 residents to these attacks. Those lives and the lives of all others will be honored on October 7th, the day our troops were first deployed

On October 7, 2019, Give2Those Stride & Ride Relay, a 501(c)(3) organization, will honor these individuals during their annual relay.

The Stride & Ride Relay is a 911-mile relay that begins on October 5, 2019, at the 9/11 Memorial at Boston Logan Airport. This 8-day journey will end in Washington DC, where thousands of individuals will be honored as their photos are laid on the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in honor and remembrance. The relay stops at over 60 different memorials along the way, such as the 9/11 Memorial in Hoboken. At each stop, the flag is passed to another member of the tactical team or volunteer to be carried during the next leg, which will complete 1 of 5 stages: walk, ruck, run, bike, or motorcycle.

“As a nation, we must never forget the sacrifices made when citizens step up to serve the nation, whether in the Armed Forces or as a first responder for they willingly do so,” said Heather Viveiros, founder of Give2Those and the Stride & Ride Relay. “The [Stride & Ride Relay] is a way to pay honor and tribute to their lives and to never forget that our nation’s freedom, values, and protections are because of those who serve, as well as a way to remember the day when American citizens became heroes on September 11, 2001.”

Over 10,000 photos of all 9/11 victims, veterans, and first responders that have been lost following the attacks as well as prior are honored in the Stride & Ride Relay. These photos, many of which have been submitted by the families of these heroes, are carried along this journey inside an American flag by the Stride & Ride tactical team and volunteers.

The Stride & Ride tactical team invites anyone in the community to join them in a 3-mile run from the War Memorial at Sinatra Park in Hoboken to the Jersey City 9/11 Memorial.

“To the residents of Hoboken, September 11, 2001 was truly an unforgettable day as we remember the valor of your loved ones who lost their lives,” Heather said. “May it comfort you in knowing that myself, along with the nation, will continue to stand together with you all. We will never forget their sacrifice and the sacrifices of the families and friends who lost loved ones.”

Give2Those provides vital financial and emotional support to veterans, active military, and first responders, as well as their families, during times of hardship and distress. They aim to put an end to the tragic veteran suicide epidemic, as well as honor and remember all the lives that have been lost.
